2023 Illinois Immigrant Impact Task Force
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker released The Illinois Immigrant Impact Task Force on May 4, 2023, a comprehensive report that delves into the various challenges facing immigrant, refugee and limited English proficiency communities. The Task Force was created via SB 2665, the Immigrant Impact Task Force Act, and consists of 27 members representing a wide and diverse group of agencies, organizations, and residents from across the state. The report shares helpful recommendations that the state can implement to assist the immigrant population better.
The Task Force’s work is focused on thirteen key areas:
- Citizenship assistance
- Business development
- Education access
- Discrimination prevention
- Immigration detention
- COVID-19 relief
- Language access programs
- Mental health services
- Non-profit support
- Public safety
- Social services
The report recommends several actionable steps the state can take to support the immigrant community and improve their lives.
“We know that 1.8 million immigrants, or 14 percent of Illinois’ population, make up an essential part of our communities, and we are committed to ensuring that they have access to the support and services they need to thrive. We are proud to be recognized for our work in supporting immigrant communities. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that every Illinois resident has access to the services they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.”
The Task Force has held a series of public hearings and meetings to gather input from immigrant communities across the state. The Task Force’s report, which is due to be released in May 2023, will include recommendations for policymakers and community leaders to better support immigrant communities in Illinois.
Here are some of the key findings and recommendations from the Task Force’s report:
- Immigrant communities are a vital part of the Illinois economy and contribute billions of dollars to the state’s GDP.
- Immigrant communities are facing a number of challenges, including language barriers, discrimination, and access to healthcare and education.
- The state needs to do more to support immigrant communities, including by providing language access services, expanding access to healthcare, and creating new programs to support immigrant entrepreneurs.
The Task Force’s report is a valuable resource for policymakers and community leaders working to support Illinois immigrant communities. The report’s recommendations can help to ensure that all immigrants have the opportunity to succeed in Illinois.
