Stop Immigration: Trump Administration Puts New Limits on Immigration | Chicago Immigration Attorney Mario Godoy

Trump Administration Puts New Limits on Immigration

As the November presidential election draws near, the Trump administration is planning to enact new limits on immigration, claiming the new restrictions are a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

• On June 11, the Education Secretary issued a rule on to prevent colleges from granting virus relief funds to foreign and undocumented students, including DACAs.

• On June 15 the administration proposed a rule to raise the standard of proof for migrants hoping to obtain asylum.

• Over 20,000 migrants have been expelled by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without due process as part of the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

The government is reviewing and expected to propose additional visa restrictions in the coming weeks, including:

• more restrictions on new skilled-worker H-1B visas to protect American jobs

• suspending L-1 visas for intracompany transfers, H-1Bs for workers in a specialty occupation, H-2Bs for temporary non-agricultural workers and J-1 visas for exchange visitors, with exceptions for Covid-19 related workers

Business Immigration Is Critical to the US Economy

A coalition of businesses and industry groups is working to block new immigration restrictions because visas allowing foreign nationals to temporarily work in the US are critical to fight the current recession and improve the U.S. economy. When asked about the proposed immigration restrictions, Greg Chen, director of government relations for the American Immigration Lawyers Association said:

“Why would he want to cut off critical workforce that will help the economy recover? It’s not a rational or reasonable approach to the stated goals of what they’re trying to achieve, which only points to the underlying purpose of effectuating the President’s campaign goals of cutting off immigration.”
Legal immigration is a key issue in the 2020 presidential campaign, and new limits on immigration has been a major rallying point in President Trump’s platform.
