Are Unemployed Immigrants Eligible for the Stimulus Check?
The United States has approved a $2 trillion economic rescue plan to provide financial help to Americans during the global coronavirus (COVID-19) health and economic pandemic. Immigrants with valid Social Security numbers and people who qualify as “resident aliens” will receive a stimulus check. The bill provides economic stimulus checks for individuals whose household falls below the $75,000 income threshold.
USA Today recently addressed the question of whether unemployed immigrants are eligible for a stimulus check:
I’m a new immigrant who got here at the end of 2019 and have not found a job yet. I haven’t filed my 2019 taxes, am I eligible for the stimulus check?
If you are a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident or a qualified resident alien, you are eligible for the payment. You do not need to have a job or other income to qualify. However, you first must provide the IRS with some payment information. You can do that by filling out the form for non-filers here.
