What Is the Green Card Lottery? | Immigration Lawyer Mario Godoy | Godoy Law Office

2020 Diversity Lottery Suspended Due to 60 Day Immigration Suspension

The executive order suspending all Green Cards for 60 days due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the resultant need to protect American jobs during the economic recovery also canceled the 2020 Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. The diversity lottery, also often called the Green Card Lottery, issues about 50,000 visas each year to applicants whose country of origin has had low immigration rates to the U.S. in the last five years. The program’s goal is to diversify the immigrant population in the United States.

What Is The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program?

The Immigration Act of 1990 established the DV program is called a lottery because there are more applicants than available visas, and the visas are granted randomly to qualified applicants. Diversity Visas are available in six geographic regions and no single country may receive more than 7% of the available DVs in any one year.

The diversity lottery was scheduled to take place in May 2020 and have 55,000 diversity visas available for Fiscal Year 2021.
