The DV program’s goal is to diversify the immigrant population in the United States.

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, commonly called the Green Card lottery, annually awards around 50,000 United States Legal Permanent Resident Visas to applicants whose country of origin has had low immigration rates to the U.S. in the last five years. The program’s goal is to diversify the immigrant population in the United States.
The Immigration Act of 1990 established the DV program, called a lottery because there are more applicants than available visas, and the visas are granted randomly to qualified applicants. Diversity Visas are available in six geographic regions and no single country may receive more than 7% of the available DVs in any one year.
