Illinois Immigrant Population Declining _ Chicago Immigration Attorney Mario Godoy

Illinois Immigrant Population Declining

Illinois lost nearly 2% of its residents between 2010 and 2020. Recent data shows that the state of Illinois has lost population for 7 years running and has witnessed the 2nd-largest population loss of all U.S. states since 2010. What Chicago’s population remained the same during the past year, downstate Illinois saw a 5% population decrease. “A decline in immigration and shrinking economic opportunities in Illinois” are the primary reasons for the decrease in population, according to  Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP).

Illinois’ population declined from 12,667,017 residents to 12,587,530 in 2020 — a nearly 80,000-person decrease.

Illinois Welcomes Immigrants

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot are going out of their way to proclaim the state and city as welcoming to immigrants. In a climate of anti-immigration, here are Illinois and Chicago welcome immigrants to our communities:

• Chicago Strengthens Immigrant Protections

• Chicago Named Most Immigrant-Friendly City

Illinois Welcomes Skilled Foreign Workers

Illinois companies are looking for skilled, talented and educated foreigners to move to Illinois to work and help grow local businesses and the economy. Relocating to the Chicago area or downstate an expat requires considerable effort, paperwork and fees, including a work permit, which can take some time to get approved. Illinois business immigration work visas are a work permit that allows you to live and work in the US.

Nonimmigrant (temporary) and immigrant (permanent) employment-based visas are established and regulated by the United States Congress:

  • tech immigrants
  • healthcare professionals
  • educators
  • immigrant entrepreneurs
  • finance professionals
