National Freedom Day | Chicago Criminal Defense Attorney Mario Godoy

National Freedom Day

February 1st is National Freedom Day. President Abraham Lincoln signed a resolution to abolish slavery on February 1, 1865, which later became the 13 Amendment to the United States Constitution. The resolution was ratified by the states to make all people free regardless of their skin color or origin.

The 13th Amendment is an important change to the U.S. Constitution that outlawed slavery in the United States. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed a proclamation declaring that February 1 is officially recognized as National Freedom Day. Richard R. Wright, a former slave, first proposed that National Freedom Day should be celebrated every February 1. It is now also the 1st day of Black History Month.

Another amendment that protects your rights in a criminal case is the Sixth Amendment to the US Constitution. The Sixth Amendment guarantees:

•  your right to a public trial

•  your right to a trial without any unnecessary delay, also known as a speedy trial

•  you the right to a lawyer

•  the right to a jury trial in criminal cases

And most importantly the 6th Amendment guarantees your right to know who your accusers are and the nature of the charges and evidence against you.

If you or someone you know has been arrested, please call us for a consultation. Our law firm’s mission is to protect your American dream, and we take your freedom very seriously.
