Updates To USCIS Expedite Request Policy

https://www.uscis.gov/newsroom/alerts/uscis-updates-policy-guidance-clarifying-expedite-requests

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has updated its rules to explain how they respond to requests about speeding up requests for help, known as expedite requests. They’ve made it clearer when they’ll speed up cases in emergencies or urgent humanitarian situations or because someone needs to travel urgently.

  1. Government Interests:
USCIS clarified when it can rush cases that the government thinks are really important. This includes cases that affect public safety, national interests or security. If a government agency asks for a case to be rushed because it’s important, USCIS will usually agree and “generally defer to that agency or department’s assessment.”
  2. Travel-Related Requests:
USCIS can also speed up requests for travel documents, like Form I-131. This is for people in the U.S. who urgently need to leave the country for reasons like work, school or personal emergencies. USCIS will look at when the form was filed and how long it takes to process to decide if they can speed it up.
  3. Submitting and Processing Expedite Requests:
USCIS has made it easier to ask for a rush on a case. Applicants can now file for an expedite request online or by contacting USCIS. They promise to respond quickly to these requests. Expedite request applicants can use USCIS online tools with secure messaging and upload evidence to support their expedite request through their USCIS online account.

These new rules are in effect immediately and replace any older rules. They’re meant to make it easier for people who need help quickly from USCIS.
