Nurses, lawyers, teachers, students and other professionals were among the thousands of Dreamers who journeyed to Washington D.C. to rally outside the Supreme Court and demonstrate the need for immigrants’ rights and provide a face for young people in their 20’s without a country to call home. Nationwide, high school and college students of various immigration status walked out of class in support of preserving DACA. The future of immigrant youth and adults in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program will be determined by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2020 based on DACA hearings on November 12.
PBS reports there are currently 1.2 million DACA-eligible residents living in the U.S., although only about 703,890 are enrolled in the program. Given the national economic impact of what Dreamers contribute to the GDP, the end of DACA would be a tremendous blow to the U.S. economy.
