Expedited Green Cards for STEM Applicants Gets Bipartisan Push
A new proposed amendment to the fiscal 2023 National Defense Authorization Act H.R. 7900 would provide expedited green cards for STEM applicants in certain fields. National security professionals say Congress needs to simplify and expedite the path for STEM visas so the United States can recruit and retain specialized security workers. The bipartisan proposed amendment would apply to immigrants with doctoral degrees focused on advanced computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, advanced missile propulsion technologies, semiconductors and other areas of study that support national security efforts.
Under the proposed bill, individuals who want to work in an industry deemed critical for economic or national security, plus their immediate family members, would be eligible for expedited green cards for STEM applicants to bypass visa processing delays that can last decades. The bipartisan proposal would speed up green cards for immigrants with doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, or math from U.S. research institutions or comparable schools abroad.
J-1 Visa STEM Extension
Earlier this year, the J-1 visa STEM extension was announced for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years to help the U.S. economic recovery. The Early Career STEM Research Initiative will facilitate training for undergraduate and pre-doctoral university students in STEM fields on a J-1 academic visa for up to 36 months.
