New Documentary: Immigration Nation
A new documentary series Immigration Nation launches on Netflix August 3 and exposes the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy through both the eyes of immigrants entering the system and the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The New York Times is reporting that the filmmakers were “pressured by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to remove a number of scenes,” and were threatened to delay the release until after the 2020 presidential elections. Filmmakers Christina Clusiau and Shaul Schwarz said ICE threatened to subpoena raw footage and “threatened legal action” if scenes that negatively portrayed their policies and actions were not removed. The filmmakers spent three years following families separated at the border, migrant workers, refugees, lawyers and activists to capture all sides of the U.S. immigration crisis.
Immigration Nation is an in-depth look at the impact of Trump’s policies on the U.S. southern border with Mexico. Scenes that the government tried to block show ICE officers breaking laws, lying to immigrants about their rights and arresting two “collaterals” (undocumented people who were not targets) during an operation aimed specifically at apprehending a third person.
