New USCIS Processing Goals To Reduce Wait Times

New USCIS Processing Goals To Reduce Wait Times

In March, the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) reported long delays and wait times for many types of employment and family-sponsored immigration, and offered 11 recommendations on how U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and members of Congress can get the agency ‘back on course toward efficient processing of benefits.’ In order to reduce the immigration backlog and reduce processing wait times, USCIS recently set new processing goals for applications to implement by the end of the fiscal year 2023. To achieve the new processing goals,  USCIS said they plan to:

  • add additional staffing where necessary
  • enhance current technology increase capacity

USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou said:

“USCIS remains committed to delivering timely and fair decisions to all we serve. Every application we adjudicate represents the hopes and dreams of immigrants and their families, as well as their critical immediate needs such as financial stability and humanitarian protection.”

What Are USCIS Cycle Times?

A USCIS cycle time measures how many months’ worth of pending cases for a particular form are waiting for a decision. Cycle times are comparable to the agency’s publicly posted median processing times. The processing time displayed on the USCIS website is the amount of time it took the agency to complete 80% of adjudicated cases over the last six-month period.

How To Check USCIS Processing Times

USCIS says that they use cycle times to gauge how much progress the agency is, or is not, making on reducing the backlog and overall case processing times. Individuals can check their processing time at: https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/

USCIS received more than $400 million from Congress in March to address processing delays and application backlogs.
