US Ends COVID Test Requirement for International Air Travelers
On June 12, the CDC lifted its requirement for international air travelers to get a negative COVID test before entering the U.S. On Friday, June 10, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that it was going to lift the testing requirement on June 12 at 12:01 a.m. CDC officials have determined that the widespread adoption of vaccines and treatments for Covid-19 no longer makes it necessary.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said,
“CDC’s determination is welcome news for travelers and for millions of American workers whose jobs are supported by international travel. Guided by the latest science and data available, the decision reflects a current reality shaped for the better by the hard work of public health professionals and the Administration to distribute effective vaccines and treatments. Over the next 48 hours and beyond, our department will assist to ensure a smooth transition for travelers and airlines alike.”
First introduced in January 2021, the COVID testing requirement was introduced because at that time, less than 10% of Americans were vaccinated. The requirement to wear masks on planes and other forms of public transport was struck down by a Florida federal judge in April. In November, U.S. land borders were opened to fully vaccinated travelers.
The CDC will reevaluate the need for COVID testing every 90 days. A senior Biden official said,
“We are able to take this step because of the tremendous progress we’ve made in our fight against the virus: We have made lifesaving vaccines and treatments widely available and these tools are working to prevent serious illness and death, and are effective against the prevalent variants circulating in the U.S. and around the world.”
