66,000 Citizenship Ceremonies Per Month On Hold | Chicago Immigration Attorney Mario Godoy

66,000 Citizenship Ceremonies Per Month On Hold

Every month, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) naturalizes approximately 66,000 immigrants, according to the Migration Policy Institute statistics. The cancellation of citizenship ceremonies in March due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) social distancing measures means that potentially hundreds of thousands of immigrants will not be able to vote in the November 2020 presidential election and local elections.

• Domestic field offices will send notices to applicants and petitioners with scheduled appointments and naturalization ceremonies impacted by this closure.

• Scheduled interviews or naturalization ceremony appointments will automatically be rescheduled once normal operations resume.

The National Partnership for New Americans projected 860,000 naturalized citizens in 2020, prior to the coronavirus cancellations. Key swing states including Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Michigan typically have a high number of immigrant voters and results could be impacted by the delay in naturalization.
