President Joe Biden has been in office for nearly 11 months. On his first day in office, January 20, 2021, Biden issued orders for temporary changes to the enforcement of the immigration law while a full review is underway. Newly released information on detainees and deportations under shows that deportations have dropped 90% since 2019, and the number of undocumented immigrants in detention centers has increased by more than 50% since Biden took office.
Deportations Dropped 90%
A report by the Center for Immigration Studies found that the Covid pandemic combined with the Biden administration’s new border policies has decreased the number of deportations. President Joe Biden’s administration has rolled back the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies that sped up deportations. The data was released under the Freedom of Information Act, and shows that:
• ICE is likely to remove 62,000 undocumented immigrants in fiscal year 2021, down from about 186,000 in 2020.
• 2020 had lower deportation activity due to the pandemic.
• In fiscal year 2019, before the COVID-19 crisis hit, removals were just over 267,000.
50% More Undocumented Immigrants in Detention
The Biden administration issued a February interim memorandum from that instructed immigration agents to focus on detaining undocumented immigrants suspected of terrorism or espionage, those who entered the country illegally after Nov. 1, 2020, and those convicted of an aggravated felony. Statistics compiled by Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) found that 56% more undocumented immigrants are in ICE detention centers since Biden took office:
• On October 1, 22,129 immigrants were in ICE detention centers.
• In March 2020, 38,000 people were in ICE detention centers.
