On September 28, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that effective September 26, it has automatically extended the validity of green cards to 24 months due to the heavy backlog of immigration documents and applications. This is for lawful permanent residents (LPRs) who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. On September 26, USCIS began printing amended receipt notices for individuals with a pending Form I-90 that “can be presented with an expired Green Card as evidence of continued status.” The increased automatic extension period extends the 12-month automatic extension period previously provided.
