#DYK You Can Renew Your Green Card Online?

Are you a current green card holder, and it is set to expire in the next 6 months? You may be able to renew your green card online using Form I-90. A green card (officially known as a Permanent Resident Card) is proof that you are allowed to live and work permanently in the United States. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website provides the following instructions to file to renew your green card online:

Create a USCIS online account to file online and:

  • Submit evidence and pay fees electronically;
  • Receive case status updates about your case and see your complete case history;
  • Communicate with us securely and directly; and
  • Respond to requests for evidence.

If you already have a USCIS online account, simply sign into your account to get started.

Not all green card applications can easily be renewed online, depending on your specific situation. An experienced immigration lawyer can review your case history and circumstances and advise and guide you on the best opportunity to renew your green card as quickly as possible.

Validity Of Green Cards Extended to 24 Months

On September 28, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that effective September 26, it has automatically extended the validity of green cards to 24 months due to the heavy backlog of immigration documents and applications. This is for lawful permanent residents (LPRs) who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. On September 26, USCIS began printing amended receipt notices for individuals with a pending Form I-90 that “can be presented with an expired Green Card as evidence of continued status.” The increased automatic extension period extends the 12-month automatic extension period previously provided.
