I=Cause: Immigration Day of Action at University of Illinois | Mario Godoy | Chicago Immigration Lawyer

Immigration Day of Action at University of Illinois

A group of students at the University of Illinois organized an Immigration Day of Action to educate students about creating an inclusive climate for undocumented students. I-CAUSE (Illinois Coalition Assisting Undocumented Students’ Education) held the rally to explain the importance of DACA and in preparation for the upcoming court cases in the coming months.

The United States Supreme Court announced they will hear DACA arguments in the fall of 2019. In July, the Court denied a request by the Trump administration for the court to quickly hear oral arguments to end DACA, which the Trump administration has been prevented from ending DACA over the last year by a series of lower court rulings. Oral arguments will begin November 12 and a decision from the Court is expected in early 2020 during the 2020 presidential campaigns.

“We’re facing jobs being lost, people being deported, people who have been granted a two-year stay and can be subject to not being renewed,” said I-CAUSE member Jasyln Rios

I-CAUSE also sold stickers to raise funds for scholarships for undocumented students on campus.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was launched during the Obama administration to stop the deportation of  Dreamers, 700,000 young undocumented immigrants who were unknowingly and illegally brought to the United States as infants.
