Karine Jean-Pierre was named as President Joe Biden’s choice for White House Press Secretary. She is the first Black and out LGBTQ+ person to hold the position, and is a Haitian immigrant. Jean-Pierre was born in Martinique to Haitian parents and raised in New York. Her father was a taxi driver and her mother worked as a home health aide. Jean-Pierre served as the principal deputy press secretary and started her new position on May 13,
At the press briefing announcing her appointment, Jean-Pierre said,
“This is a historic moment, and it’s not lost on me. I understand how important it is for so many people out there, so many different communities, that I stand on their shoulders and I have been throughout my career.”
Biden campaigned on the issue of race and thanked African Americans for his victory and promised he would deliver on his campaign promises:
“I mean it, especially in those moments and especially for those moments when this campaign was at its lowest ebb, the African American community stood up again for me. You’ve always had my back, and I’ll have yours.”
