Beware of Immigration Scams

Tips For Avoiding Immigration Scams

USCIS Tips For Avoiding Immigration Scam

Here are some tips from USCIS to avoid immigration fraud and scams.

  • If you receive a job offer by email before you leave your country to come to the U.S., it may be a scam, especially if you are asked to pay money.
  • If you see a job offer on social media, make sure the company is legitimate.
  • Sometimes businesses and websites pretend to be immigration experts and say they have special connections to the government.
  • If a website or business “guarantees” that you can get a visa, Green Card or work permit if you pay a fee, it’s likely a scam.
  • International students outside of the U.S. who want to come to the U.S. for education should be sure you are applying to an accredited college or university.
  • USCIS will never request money via email.
  • Scams associated with the processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans may say there is a fee to file Form I-134A, there is no fee.

How to Report Immigration Scams

USCIS advises victims of immigration scams to report the scam to your state consumer protection office. If you lost money or other possessions in a scam, victims should also report it to your local police, too.
