To prevent fraud, counterfeits and scams, USCIS released a new green card design on January 30, 2023. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced new designs to improve the security of Permanent Resident Cards (also known as green cards) and Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) using state-of-the-art technology to continue to safeguard national security and improve service for their customers. USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou said,
“This redesign further demonstrates USCIS’ commitment to taking a proactive approach against the threat of secure document tampering, counterfeiting, and fraud. Consistent updates to secure documents, informed by our knowledge of the latest methods of bad actors and the innovation and ingenuity of our staff, ensure the continued integrity of secure documents issued by our agency.”
Current green cards will remain valid until their expiration date. The green cards were last designed in May 2017.
There is no such thing as a “green card lawyer.” A green card is a nickname for immigration form I-551 which is proof of Legal Permanent Resident status (LPR). The nickname came about because many years ago, form I-551 cards were actually green! Today, LPR identification cards are not typically green, but the nickname has continued.
