USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) is working against a September 30 deadline to reissue 280,000 available green cards and avoid the repeat of unused ones that happened last year. In 2021 during the pandemic, tens of thousands of green cards expired unused due to backlogs and long processing times. The 280,000 employment-based green cards would help foreign workers fill jobs during the U.S. labor shortage.
USCIS has taken steps to meet the September 30 deadline to reissue the green cards:
A USCIS official said, “We want to get them all through the process as efficiently as possible.”
