Illinois has passed a law that will allow undocumented immigrants to obtain standard driver’s licenses. Governor J.B. Prizker signed a law replacing the current Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL) with a standard license that will last four years. This will impact over 300,000 people who currently hold the temporary licenses.
In signing the bill, Pritzker said,
“This legislation is a significant step in eliminating the barriers to opportunity that many undocumented immigrants face. We’re ensuring every eligible individual can obtain a driver’s license, making our roads safer, decreasing stigma, and creating more equitable systems for all.”
The law is aimed at giving undocumented immigrants access to an Illinois drivers licenses, which will allow them to drive legally and obtain other benefits, such as employment and housing. It is also seen as a way to reduce discrimination against undocumented immigrants.
The law is the latest in a series of pro-immigrant measures that have been passed in Illinois in recent years. Pritzker also signed a law banning landlord discrimination based on immigration status.
Immigrants in the United States have legal rights, even if they are undocumented and do not have a visa or a green card. All immigrants should be aware of their legal rights and protections.
