Citizenship Lawyer: New Grants to Fund Citizenship Programs

New Grants to Fund Citizenship Programs

USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) announced it is accepting applications for grants to community groups that provide citizenship preparation programs. To apply for these funding opportunities, visit www.grants.gov.

In announcing the new funding on May 17, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said,

“It is critical that we provide immigrants pursuing citizenship and the organizations who help support their efforts with the tools to be successful.”

“USCIS is committed to empowering immigrants to pursue citizenship and the privileges that accompany it,” said Acting USCIS Director Tracy Renaud.

Requirements for U.S. Citizenship

To become a naturalized U.S. citizen, applicants must pass a citizenship test:

• Applicants must correctly answer questions to pass the Civics section, which is the U.S. history and government part of the test.

• In the English section, they must correctly read and write one out of three sentences.

• Their ability to speak English is determined by the USCIS officer conducting the interview.

USCIS naturalized 625,400 new citizens in FY 2020.
