In appreciation for the support military families provide for military members, November is USCIS Military Family Month. Spouses and children of active and retired military members may be eligible for special U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services benefits and services, including the spouses and children of active, retired and deceased immigrant and non-citizens U.S. military members.
Some of the special citizenship benefits and services for military family members include:
1. Expedited Naturalization for Spouses of Military Members
Military members stationed abroad with their families do not have the ability to maintain a residence in the United States. For their foreign-born spouses, this is a significant obstacle to becoming a U.S. citizen, and receiving all the benefits and protections of citizenship. The spouse of a military member who is living overseas with his or her deployed partner can potentially waive the physical presence and continuous residence requirements, and expedite their naturalization process.
2. Naturalization or Citizenship for Children of Service Members
Children of service members who are employed or stationed outside of the U.S. may be eligible for naturalization or may be eligible to automatically acquire citizenship. Children of military members living outside of the U.S. may apply for naturalization without traveling to the United States for the naturalization process, including interviews, filings, oaths, ceremonies and other naturalization proceedings.
3. Survivorship Benefits for Military Members
Spouses and children of deceased immigrant military members may be entitled to citizenship survivorship benefits, including citizenship if they died as a result of an injury or disease caused or aggravated by their military service.
