NEW: Online Filing for DACA Renewal Forms

NEW: Online Filing for DACA Renewal Forms

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will allow online filing of DACA renewal forms, effective immediately. Individuals who previously received deferred action under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) may now file Form I-821D, Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals online. The new online filing option will help lighten the immigration backlog and expedite immigration processing. In announcing the new online filing, USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou said:

“The expansion of online filing is a priority for USCIS as we make our operations more efficient and effective for the agency and our stakeholders, applicants, petitioners and requestors. The option to file DACA renewal requests online is part of USCIS’ ongoing move to minimize reliance on paper records and further transition to an electronic environment.”

Minimizing the paperwork backlog, currently at a 40-year high, is critical to improving USCIS efficiency. Currently, the immigration process is mainly a manual, pen and paper system, with antiquated technology and limited electronic resources.

How to File Online DACA Renewal Forms

The option to file DACA renewal forms online is only available for individuals who have previously been granted DACA status.

  • Individuals must file Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, which is available for online filing.
  • Individuals must file Form I-765 Worksheet, which is required as evidence in support of the filing for DACA.
  • The DACA requestor must create a USCIS online account at www.myaccount.uscis.gov. This is a convenient and secure method to submit forms, pay fees and track the status of any pending USCIS immigration request throughout the adjudication process.
  • There is no cost to set up an online account.
  • An online account offers the ability to communicate with USCIS through a secure inbox and respond online to Requests for Evidence.

Who Needs DACA Status Renewal?

Former President Obama launched the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in 2012  to address the problem of young people stuck in immigration limbo because they were brought to the U.S. while very young, through no choice of their own, without documentation. These young nonimmigrant people have problems seeking education, jobs and other normal lifestyle activities due to their status.

Individuals are eligible to renew their DACA status if they currently have DACA status, or if they had it in the past.

  • DACA status must not have expired more than 1 year ago.
  • Current DACA expiration date can’t be more than one year from now.
  • Didn’t leave the United States since initial application for DACA without getting Advance Parole.
  • Lived in the United States continuously since most recent approved DACA application.
  • Never been charged with a felony, a significant misdemeanor, or several smaller misdemeanors.
