Over 300,000 Citizenships Backlogged And Won't Vote | Immigration Attorney Mario A. Godoy | Godoy Law Office

Over 300,000 Citizenships Backlogged And Won’t Vote

Over 300,000 immigrants will likely not become United States citizens in time to cast ballots in the 2020 presidential election. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the agency that processes immigration benefits, suspended in-person interviews and citizenship ceremonies this spring amid the coronavirus pandemic. Over 66,000 citizenship ceremonies per month were put on hold. According to projections, by 2020 voter registration deadlines, there will be over 300,000 citizenships backlogged resulting in those immigrants being unable to vote in the 2020 elections.

Although citizenship interviews and ceremonies began to resume in June on a limited basis, there is a backlog of both citizenship interviews and oath ceremonies that will take months to catch up. In addition, 75% of USCIS staff is expected to be furloughed real soma online this summer due to an agency budget shortfall, which will increase and prolong the immigration backlog.
