Understanding the new pauses on immigration

Understanding the New Pauses on Immigration Applications: What You Need to Know

Recent immigration updates have created confusion and stress for many families, especially for people from the 19 countries listed in Presidential Proclamation 10949. These new changes affect asylum cases, visa processing, green cards, and even citizenship ceremonies.

This blog explains the updates so you can understand what is happening—and know what steps to take next.

1. USCIS Stops All Asylum and Benefit Applications for High-Risk Countries

USCIS released a new policy memo (PM-602-0192) that pauses:

  • All asylum applications, from all applicants
  • All immigration benefit applications (like work permits and green cards) for people from the 19 listed countries

USCIS will also re-review past approvals for people from those countries who entered the U.S. on or after January 20, 2021.

This means some applications will slow down, and some might be checked again.

👉 If your case is paused or you belong to one of the 19 affected countries, contact Godoy Law Office today at 630-345-4164, we can review your situation and explain what this pause means for you.

More updates from USCIS are expected soon.

2. New Restrictions After the National Guard Shooting

After the tragic shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., the Trump Administration announced major new immigration restrictions.

These include:

  • Stronger security checks
  • A pause by the Department of State on issuing visas to people traveling with Afghan passports
  • New rules that could affect refugees, asylees, green card holders, and others applying for immigration benefits

These changes happened quickly, and more may follow.

👉 If your visa application was recently delayed—or if you are planning to travel—speak to an attorney before making any decisions.

3. USCIS Pauses Final Decisions for Nationals of the 19 Travel Ban Countries

USCIS also released guidance that pauses all final decisions for people from the same 19 countries.
This includes:

  • Approvals
  • Denials
  • Citizenship oath ceremonies
  • Green card interviews

Applicants have already reported:

  • Sudden cancellations of naturalization ceremonies
  • Canceled adjustment of status interviews
  • USCIS saying they cannot issue a final decision yet

This has affected people from Venezuela, Iran, Afghanistan, and others.

👉 If USCIS canceled your appointment or ceremony, do not panic. Save the notice and contact Godoy Law Office today at 630-345-4164.

More guidance will be shared when USCIS completes its new vetting process.
