USCIS Launches Self-Service Biometrics Scheduling Tool

USCIS launched its new self-service biometric services appointment rescheduling tool on June 28. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) previously required requestors to reschedule a biometric services appointment by calling the USCIS Contact Center. This was a time-consuming and inconvenient process, especially for those who had difficulty reaching the Contact Center or who did not have access to a phone.

With the introduction of a new online tool, individuals who have or create a USCIS online account can now reschedule most requests for biometric services appointments without having to call the Contact Center. This new tool is a more convenient and efficient way to reschedule appointments, and it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The planned self-service biometrics scheduling tool was announced by USCIS as part of their commitment to improving their customer service:

“We are working steadily to improve the customer experience by designing and delivering services in a manner that people of all abilities can access,” said USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou.

Limitations To The Self-Service Biometrics Scheduling Tool

There are some limitations to the new tool. It cannot be used to reschedule an appointment that:

  • has already been rescheduled two or more times,
  • is within 12 hours
  • or that has already passed.

In these cases, benefit requestors and accredited representatives will still need to call the USCIS Contact Center to reschedule their appointment.

Guidance On Biometric Appointment Rescheduling

USCIS has issued guidance on how to reschedule a biometric services appointment for good cause. Good cause exists when the reschedule request provides a sufficient reason for the benefit requestor’s inability to appear on the scheduled date. Some examples of good cause include:

  • Illness, medical appointment, or hospitalization
  • Previously planned travel
  • Significant life events such as a wedding, funeral, or graduation ceremony
  • Inability to obtain transportation to the appointment location
  • Inability to obtain leave from employment or caregiver responsibilities
  • Late delivered or undelivered biometric services appointment notice

If you are unable to attend your scheduled biometric services appointment for good cause, you must request to reschedule your appointment before the date and time of your original appointment. You can do this by calling the USCIS Contact Center or by using the online rescheduling tool.
