A new law in Florida is making it harder for all immigrants, even those who have all their papers in order. State Bill 846 is causing a lot of problems, especially for universities in Florida.
Teachers, students and people who help immigrants are upset about this new law because it’s making it tough for universities in Florida to bring in smart students from China. Even though politicians say the law is to stop China’s influence, it’s actually making it harder for students to learn and for scientists to make new discoveries.
“Individuals, they cannot decide where they are born. They’re only thinking of their educational opportunities.”
– Chenglong Li, professor at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy
The Florida State Bill 846 prohibits state universities and colleges from accepting grants or partnering with those “domiciled” in China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, or Syria.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that the legislation is part of an attempt to counter China’s “malign influence” in the state. The big issue here is fairness. The law isn’t fair because it treats people differently based on where they come from. That’s not right. It’s stopping Chinese students from coming to Florida to study, which isn’t fair to them or to Florida’s schools. When we stop students from different places from coming here together to share ideas, America misses out on a lot.
The State University Board of Governors can make some exceptions to SB 846.
People are protesting this unfair law, going to court to try to change it and raising awareness.
