The United States welcomed a diverse group of nearly a million new citizens in 2023, highlighting the country’s commitment to inclusivity and its rich immigrant history. Fiscal year 2023 saw a record number of naturalizations, with USCIS welcoming nearly 878,500 new citizens in ceremonies held across the globe. This surge represents almost a quarter of all naturalizations over the past ten years.

Who Became Naturalized Citizens In 2023?

The largest number of new citizens lived in:

  • Dallas (4.1% of all naturalization)
  • Houston (4.1%)
  • Chicago (3.7%)
  • Newark (3.4%)
  • San Francisco (2.9%)

The top 5 countries of birth comprised 32% of the naturalized citizens in 2023:

  • Mexico (12.7% of all naturalization)
  • India (6.7%)
  • Philippines (5.1%)
  • Dominican Republic (4.0%)
  • Cuba (3.8%)

#NewUSCitizens were all ages:

  • Women made up nearly 55% of those naturalized.
  • More than 39% of citizens naturalized in 2023 were 30 – 44 years old.
  • 18% were younger than 30 years old.
  • 37 new citizens were centenarians (age 100 and older)!
