Can Foreign Nurses Get a Visa to Work in Chicago Illinois? | Chicago Immigration Attorney Mario Godoy

Can Foreign Nurses Get a Visa to Work in Chicago Illinois?

The United States is facing a nursing shortage due to the number of trained nurses who are retiring and an aging Baby Boomer population that requires more medical care. The nursing shortage has been complicated by the coronavirus’ (COVID-19) strain on trained healthcare professionals in hospitals, laboratories, nursing homes and other health care facilities. Trained, skilled foreign nurses are needed and being actively recruited by many Chicago-area health care providers. The recent suspension of all U.S. immigration has left many foreign nurses and employers questioning whether foreign nurses can get a visa to work in Chicago.

On April 22, 2020, President Trump announced a 60-day immigration suspension of entry into the United States to protect American jobs during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. A key exception to the immigration suspension is healthcare workers.

The 60-day green card immigration suspension does not apply to healthcare workers:

Individuals, their spouses and their children who want to enter the United States on an immigrant visa as a physician, nurse, or other healthcare professional; to perform medical research or other research intended to combat the spread of COVID-19; or to perform work essential to combating, recovering from, or otherwise alleviating the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, as determined by the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Homeland Security, or their respective designees.
