In celebration of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) held naturalization ceremonies throughout the greater Chicago area in September and October that welcomed immigrants as #NewUSCitizens:
After the naturalization ceremonies, the #NewUSCitizens were offered the opportunity to register to vote in the upcoming November elections. Becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen is a key step in gaining the right to vote in U.S. elections. Until a person becomes a citizen, they are generally not eligible to vote in federal, state or most local elections. Once naturalized, a person has full voting rights, which allows them to participate in choosing leaders and shaping policies that impact their community and the country. After the naturalization ceremony, new US citizens can register to vote, often with support from volunteers or organizations present at the event, helping them quickly and easily complete this essential civic responsibility. Registering to vote formalizes this new right, enabling participation in upcoming elections.
