Green Card Approval Rate Reaches Record Lows: Why Hiring An Immigration Attorney Can Help

Green Card Approval Rate Reaches Record Lows: Why Hiring An Immigration Attorney Can Help

The United States’ green card approval rate has hit a historic low amid visa caps. Only 3.8% of green card applications were approved in 2023, marking the lowest approval rate ever recorded. Experts expect the approval rate to decline even steeper in 2024, with the approval rate expected to fall to just 3%. Almost 22.2 million people in 2023 sought one of the 55,000 green card visas provided through the annual green card lottery.

A new report by the Cato Institute, “Green Card Approval Rate Reaches Record Lows,” highlights a significant decrease in the approval rate for green cards in the United States. Here are the key points:

  • Historically low approval rates:
Before limitations were imposed in 1921, nearly all immigrants (around 98%) received green cards annually. After the caps, the average approval rate dropped to just 16%. In 2023, it reached a record low of 3.8%, meaning over 96% of applicants were rejected.
  • Expected even lower rates in 2024:
The article projects an even lower approval rate of just 3% for 2024.
  • Reasons for the decline: The article cites two main reasons:
    • Caps on green cards: The government sets annual limits on the number of green cards issued, leading to backlogs and competition among applicants.
    • Underutilization of available slots: The government hasn’t consistently issued all the green cards allowed under the caps, further contributing to the backlog and lowering the approval rate.
