Sample Stimulus Checks

Immigrants Without Social Security Numbers Are Not Eligible for Stimulus Checks

The $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill stimulus package that passed the House and Senate on March 11 will deliver $1,400 checks to Americans and provide funding for reopening schools, vaccine rollouts and small businesses. Anyone who pays taxes in the United States as a resident is eligible for a stimulus payment. Immigrants with valid Social Security numbers and people who qualify as “resident aliens” are eligible to receive a stimulus check. The American Rescue Plan provides economic stimulus checks for individuals whose household falls below the $75,000 income threshold.

Distribution of the 2021 COVIE stimulus check has begun.

During arguments over the bill, Democratic Illinois Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois addressed claims by Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz saying, “because if an immigrant is here illegally, he or she won’t have a Social Security number, which is required to receive a stimulus check.”

DACA Recipients
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients should qualify for a stimulus check because they are issued Social Security numbers.

Temporary Protected Status
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders should qualify for a stimulus check because they are issued Social Security numbers.

Mixed Status Households
Individuals with a Social Security Number in mixed-status families are eligible for the new COVID-19 stimulus checks.
