The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended the deadline for REAL ID-compliant identification. The new deadline is May 7, 2025. This means that you will not be able to use your current driver’s license or identification card to board flights within the United States or visit secure federal facilities after this date.
REAL ID is a set of security standards established by the federal government to make driver’s licenses and identification cards more secure. These standards include things like requiring a person’s photograph, date of birth, and full legal name to be printed on the ID, as well as requiring proof of identity and residency.
The most recent deadline for REAL ID compliance was May 3, 2023. However, DHS extended the deadline due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic made it difficult for people to obtain the necessary documentation to get a REAL ID-compliant ID.
If you need a REAL ID-compliant ID before the new deadline, you can apply for one at your local DMV. You will need to provide proof of identity, residency and Social Security number. You may also need to provide other documentation, such as a birth certificate or passport.
Cost Of REAL ID
The cost of a REAL ID-compliant ID varies by state. In Illinois, for example, the fee to get a REAL ID is $30, which is the same as a regular driver’s license or ID.
If you do not have a REAL ID-compliant ID by May 7, 2025, you will still be able to drive in Illinois. However, you will not be able to use your driver’s license to board flights within the United States or visit secure federal facilities.
According to the TSA website, all of these documents are REAL ID travel-compliant:
TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States.
