On March 19th, a naturalization ceremony was held at the Coronado Performing Arts Center in Rockford, Illinois, to welcome 292 new U.S. citizens from 66 countries. U.S. Magistrate Lisa Jensen of the Northern Illinois District, ASM Rockford General Manager Gretchen Gilmore and Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara all participated in the celebratory event.
“On behalf of the court, welcome and congratulations to our newest citizens. The ability to vote in elections is one of the greatest privileges and responsibilities that comes with U.S. Citizenship. On this election day, I urge you, new citizens, to register and vote in elections so you can have a say in the future of our community, state, and nation,” said Chief Judge Rebecca R. Pallmeyer, U.S. District Court N.D. Illinois.
The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois hosts naturalization ceremonies throughout the year, welcoming thousands of immigrants as #NewUSCitizens. District judges preside over these occasions, held within courthouses and across the district. Family and friends gather to witness these new citizens take the Oath of Allegiance, a solemn pledge to support and defend the U.S. Constitution and laws, officially marking their journey to becoming American.
Naturalization to become a U.S. Citizen can bring many rights and privileges, such as voting in elections and becoming eligible for certain government jobs. United States citizenship also has financial benefits and protections. Understanding all the rights and responsibilities associated with becoming a United States citizen is important before applying for naturalization. Add your name to the list of #NewUSCitizens.
