Wings of Mexico sculpture in Chicago

The Wings of Mexico: A Symbol of Immigrant Journey

The “Wings of Mexico” is on display at the Plaza of The Americas on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. The sculpture is a symbol of the immigrant journey and celebrates Chicago as a sanctuary city that is at the forefront of the defense of immigrant and refugee communities.

The sculpture traveled around the world before arriving in Chicago on May 5th to celebrate Cinco de Mayo during Mexico Week. This bronze piece, by renowned Mexican artist Jorge Marín, is on display now at the Plaza of The Americas until October 1st. May 5 commemorates the triumph of the Mexican army against the French armies of Napoleon III.

Illinois is home to 2.5 million people of Mexican descent, making it the largest ethnic minority in the state. The sculpture has traveled around the world since 2010 to more than 25 places including Madrid, Tel Aviv and Dubai.
