Illinois Attorney General Wants Answers on Immigrant Medical Care

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul and 19 other state attorneys general sent a formal inquiry to the federal government about immigrant medical care. The letter to the departments U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 with “grave concerns” about the decision to stop considering requests by immigrants to remain in the country for medical care.

Raoul said the lack of information has left sick patients and their families “afraid, traumatized, and uncertain of their future health and well-being.”

Requesting Deportation Deferrals

The letter asked the government to respond by Tuesday, September 10, to questions including how immigrants with severe medical conditions can request deportation deferrals going forward. ICE deferred responding to USCIS.

The immigrant medical care letter is also signed by attorneys general in Massachusetts, New York, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and the District of Columbia.
