As a Green Card Holder, you may have been encouraged to register to vote at the DMV when you got your drivers’ license, or when you renewed your license. 2020 is a Presidential Election year, and you may be excited to vote. However, the voter registration volunteer may not realize that Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders) are not eligible to vote until they become naturalized U.S. citizens.
What happens if you are a Green Card Holder and registered to vote – or if you actually did vote? Watch this video or reach out to us to learn more.
In this video, we are going to ask the question “Can Green Card Holders Vote?”
We thought that this was an important question since we are in an election year.
It’s important for you to know that as an immigrant and Green Card holder you may not vote in all elections. Any person that has voted in violation of Federal, State or local laws is deportable from the United States.
In order to vote in a federal election, you must be a United States citizen.
This is an area of concern because many immigrants are inadvertently registered to vote when they are updating or renewing his or her license. It is absolutely vital that you inform the Secretary of State of your immigrant status when renewing your driver’s license. If you receive a voting ballot card do not rush to vote without first speaking to an attorney.
If you have any questions on this topic, please do not hesitate to schedule a consultation.
If you are a Green Card holder who registered to vote, or if you actually did vote, it’s important to consult an immigration attorney so you do not jeopardize your immigration status. A skilled immigration attorney can put their experience to work for you and review your circumstances to help you make the decisions to help you succeed.
