Mobile Passport Control App

International Travel: Can Immigrants Sign Up For Mobile Passport Control?

If you are a green card holder or a new U.S. citizen and you are planning international travel, there is a free app that can reduce wait times at customs. Summer and holidays are notoriously busy travel times and the wait line at customs for international travelers can be extremely long.

The Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app is a tool that can potentially shorten wait times in line at U.S. Customs and Border Protection for eligible travelers returning to the country. This is particularly helpful as travel reaches peak season and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipates record travel numbers. The free app allows travelers to submit travel documents, photos, and customs declarations before arriving at the airport, potentially reducing the time it takes to speak with a customs officer and granting access to a dedicated lane that’s typically shorter than the standard one. While the MPC app is helpful for returning U.S. travelers in many major airports, it’s also functional in 14 airports overseas.

Can Green Card Holders Use The Mobile Passport Control App?

The MPC app is designed for US citizens and legal permanent residents. Green card holders must show that they are legal permanent residents of the US to be eligible to use the app.

How To Use the MPC App

  1. Download the App: Find the MPC app for free on the Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iPhone/iPad).
  2. Create Your Profile: Once downloaded, eligible travelers can set up a profile using their passport or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR, or green card holder) card information.

Using MPC at Preclearance Locations:

  • If you’re traveling through a Preclearance location (where CBP officers screen travelers before departure for the U.S.), choose “Preclearance” as your entry mode within the app. Then, select the specific Preclearance airport you’re departing from.

Using MPC Upon Arrival in the U.S.:

  • If you’re not using Preclearance, upon landing in the U.S., choose “U.S. airport” as your entry mode. Then, select your arrival airport/seaport and terminal.

Do You Have Questions About International Travel As A Green Card Holder?

Green card holders have certain rights as Legal Permanent Residents of the U.S. but not the same rights and privileges as an American Citizen. To find out more about your rights as a green card holder, and how to be naturalized to become a citizen, consult an experienced green card and citizenship attorney.
