Congressional Democrats announced an 8-year plan to citizenship for 11 million undocumented residents on February 18, 2021. President Biden’s new immigration plan is called the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 and would modernize the immigration system. Immigration reforms in the plan include:
Path To Citizenship
Undocumented residents would be required to pass background checks and pay taxes, and they would be allowed to live and work in the United States for 5 years. Then they can apply for a Green Card to get permanent status in the United States and apply for citizenship after 3 more years.
Family-Based Immigration
Remove restrictions on family-based immigration so it is easier for spouses and children to join their families already in the United States.
Work Visas
Expand work visas to allow more foreigners to come to the United States for jobs.
The plan also contains provisions for farm workers, tech workers and individuals with temporary protected status, among others, and has provisions to gain the cooperation of labor unions that protect American workers.
Biden announced his intention to overhaul the U.S. immigration system on his first day in office, and it was one of the key platforms of his presidential campaign. As the new immigration plan will take time to implement, Biden announced on a CNN Town Hall on February 16 that he would take smaller measures to help fix the immigration system “in the meantime.”
