How A Possible Government Shutdown March 22 Affects Immigration

Lawmakers just avoided a shutdown in March of 2024. If you have been paying attention to the news it seems that the U.S. is constantly arguing over a government shutdown. U.S. Senators often argue about how much money to give the government agency that deals with immigration (Department of Homeland Security). Those fights might cause a government shutdown, which means some government workers wouldn’t be able to work and some services might not be available.

How Would A Government Shutdown Impact Immigration?

DHS
If a government shutdown occurs, the critical functions of DHS would continue to operate during a shutdown, but many employees would not be paid for their work. This could significantly impact the morale and productivity of DHS employees, and it could also lead to delays in processing immigration applications and other DHS services.

CBP
During a government shutdown, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) ports of entry will remain open, and inspection and law enforcement personnel will continue to work. However, the processing of applications filed at the border may be impacted.

ICE
During a government shutdown, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will continue to carry out enforcement and removal operations, but ICE attorneys will typically focus on the detained docket.
