The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the designation of Temporary Protected Status for Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months on March 3. Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas said in the announcement,
“Russia’s premeditated and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has resulted in an ongoing war, senseless violence, and Ukrainians forced to seek refuge in other countries. In these extraordinary times, we will continue to offer our support and protection to Ukrainian nationals in the United States.”
Individuals who attempt to travel to the United States after March 1, 2022 will not be eligible for TPS.
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is given by DHS to immigrants in the U.S. who are afraid to return to their home country due to dangerous conditions. War, hurricanes, earthquakes and other extraordinary conditions can qualify a country to be deemed in crisis by DHS.
