A new gender option is now available on passports for American citizens for Americans who identify as neither exclusively male nor female. Starting April 11, U.S. citizens will be able to select the gender-neutral “X” on their passport. The U.S. special diplomatic envoy for LGBTQ rights, Jessica Stern, said:
“The addition of a third gender marker propels the U.S. forward toward ensuring that our administrative systems account for the diversity of gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics among U.S. citizens. The issuance of X gender markers on U.S. passports does not create new definitions nor rights. This policy change recognizes the true identity of the passport holder.”
Immigration documents such as Employment Authorization Cards, Permanent Resident Cards (green cards) and Naturalization Certificates are required to start a new job, enroll in school, and get other identification documents. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality,
“The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) allows individuals to update the name and/or gender marker on immigration documents through the procedures described below. NCTE always recommends you consult with an immigration attorney to receive advice specific to your immigration situation.”
