U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) made a public announcement on June 17, 2019, that USCIS Aims to Decrease Processing Times for N-400 and I-485. What this means is if you are filing for Naturalization (US Citizen) or Adjustment of Status to become a permanent resident this may be a good time to file your application.
USCIS’ press release says that during 2016 and 2017 the agency received higher than numbers of applications. This increase in applications during this period impacted some field offices more than others, resulting in significant differences in processing times at different field offices.
Chicago Immigration attorney Mario Godoy applauded the government’s commitment to expedited immigration application processing but cautioned:
While this may sound like good news, the government’s promise leaves me with some concerns. The USCIS announcement only impacts people who have not yet had their initial biometrics and immigration application interviews. This does not impact applicants who are waiting after their interview. In addition, the USCIS announcement says they may schedule an interview at a “field office outside their normal jurisdiction” – so people could have increased costs and time to travel to an interview.
