Where the Presidential Candidates Stand on Legal Immigration

Immigration has been a central election topic in the Democrat presidential candidates debates and is a key topic for voters. Despite the fact that over 99% of Americans are in fact descendants of immigrants or themselves immigrants, immigration has become a central theme in U.S. politics. President Trump’s 2016 election campaign’s central theme was immigration, and immigration continues to be a central focus of his administration’s activities.

The American Immigration Lawyer’s Association (AILA) asked where the 2020 presidential candidates stand on legal immigration:

  1. How do you propose to improve America’s legal immigration system to ensure it meets the needs of American families, communities, and businesses?

A new AILA 2020 Election Guide compiles the candidate’s positions #AILA2020Guide:

  • The following candidates have set forth comprehensive plans to reform the legal immigration system to ensure there are adequate numbers of employment-based and family-based visas to meet the needs of American families, businesses, and communities:
    • Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, John Delaney, Tulsi Gabbard, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, Tim Ryan, Bernie Sanders, Joe Sestak, and Elizabeth Warren.
  • The following candidates have proposed reforms to certain aspects of the legal immigration system but have not presented a full plan:
    • Bill Weld, Steve Bullock, Kamala Harris, and Andrew Yang.
  • The following candidates have no stated position on reforming the legal immigration system:
    • Joe Walsh, Wayne Messam, Tom Steyer, and Marianne Williamson.
  • The following candidates are calling for restrictions on legal immigration:
    • President Trump and Mark Sanford

The AILA 2020 Election Guide provides an easily accessible resource for AILA members, Congress, and the public. The Guide shows each presidential candidate’s positions and proposals for reforming and modernizing America’s immigration system. The Guide draws upon candidates’ campaign materials, public statements, and responses to a survey AILA sent to candidates. In addition, the Guide presents AILA’s positions and recommendations on key immigration issues.
