Speaking English is an important part of becoming a U.S. citizen. There are three ways someone can become a citizen of the United States:
1. Birth
2. Derivation
3. Naturalization
There are many steps to becoming a citizen through naturalization, including taking a citizenship exam. The first part of the citizenship exam will test the applicant’s ability to read, write and speak English. To take the English test, the applicants will have to read out loud 1-3 sentences in English, write down 1 – 3 English sentences, follow the examiner’s instructions and speak with the examiner about the information you provided in your citizenship application.
In some instances, you may qualify for a waiver or exemption of the English test. While the ability to speak English is an important part of the citizenship exam, there are 3 criteria to get an exemption to the English test:
• If you are 50 years or older and have had a valid green card for at least 20 years, called the 50/20 waiver.
• If you are 55 years or older and have had a valid green card for at least 15 years, called the 55/15 waiver.
• If you have a physical or mental disability that affects your ability to take the test, you may be exempted from the English test. The disability can’t be the result of using illegal drugs. You would be required to provide documentation of your disability from your physician; approval is at the discretion of USCIS.
