The Biden administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court to withdraw a Trump administration case appeal to withhold funds from sanctuary cities that do not cooperate with immigration officials during ICE raids and other non-immigration crimes. On March 4, the administration requested that the Court dismiss three pending appeals to the Trump administration’s policy of withholding millions of dollars in law enforcement funds from states and cities that refused to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The Court agreed to withdraw the appeals. The Trump administration policy would have allowed the government to withhold federal money from cities and states if they refused to cooperate with the government’s immigration enforcement.
In Illinois, Chicago is a sanctuary city, and both Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Governor J.B. Pritzer have prohibited local and state law enforcement agencies from participating in a program that would deputize officers with certain immigration ICE enforcement powers. Chicago is a safe-haven sanctuary city and immigrants make up more than 1/5 of Chicago’s population.
A sanctuary city (or county or state) limits its cooperation with federal immigration enforcement agents to protect low-priority immigrants from deportation, while still turning over those who have committed serious crimes. Many immigration advocates prefer the term “safe cities.”
Chicago was named the most immigrant-friendly city in the United States in 2019. Chicago was recognized for creating an environment that helps immigrants succeed, including the city’s language access policies, employment and homeownership rates.
